Nicki Massos talks about how she got into printmaking, the inspiration behind her vibrant monotypes and screenprints, and being part of Greenwich Printmakers.

Finding my way into printmaking: A happy accident turned lifelong passion
I didn’t plan to become a printmaker. In fact, I first discovered printmaking by what I like to call a happy accident. I had originally signed up for a painting course, but when it was cancelled at the last minute, I was offered a printmaking course instead. I thought why not give it a try?
That one class opened a door I didn’t even know existed. With inspiring tuition from David Holah at Morley College, we explored a variety of techniques, and I was immediately hooked. I went on to take many more courses, experimenting with different printmaking methods, from linocut to etching, but it was screenprinting that really clicked for me. That’s where I felt most creative and free.

From kitchen table to studio space
For a long time, I worked out of my so called ‘home studio’ - which was really just the kitchen table. Eventually I outgrew that setup and now have a dedicated space at Art Hub Studios. It’s been a game changer to have room to experiment and spread out without worrying about getting ink on the cutlery (although I have to admit, a fair few spoons did end up as mixing tools!)
Why I love screenprinting
There’s something so satisfying about the screenprinting process. I love how versatile it is, you can achieve crisp, clean detailed lines or create much more fluid, painterly prints.
I’m also drawn to the boldness of colour that screenprinting allows. You can layer transparent inks, experiment with blends, or create vibrant, solid areas of colour. There’s a balance of control and surprise in the process that keeps it exciting.

Inspired by process, place and colour
My printmaking practice tends to fall into two distinct styles, shaped by both technique and subject.
One strand of my work is a more painterly monotype approach - expressive, intuitive prints often inspired by flowers, movement, and the natural world. I work loosely, using colour, texture, and gesture to capture a sense of energy or mood. Each piece is unique, developing freely on the screen with an element of surprise that keeps the process exciting.

The other side of my practice focuses on small limited edition prints, often inspired by landscapes I’ve visited and skies at different times of day. These prints begin with softly blended backgrounds to reflect changing light and atmosphere. I build up the scene with subtle layers and shapes to create a sense of depth and feeling.
While nature has been a strong influence, I’m always open to new ideas and directions. Currently, I’m exploring ways to blend these two strands, combining painterly scenes with softly blended skies. For me, printmaking is about exploring and responding, letting the process lead the way.

Joining Greenwich Printmakers
I’m proud to be a new member of Greenwich Printmakers. It’s such a supportive, community-based group, and I love being part of a collective that promotes original printmaking techniques and shares a genuine passion for the craft. I’m excited for what’s ahead - new exhibitions, collaborations, and opportunities to share my work and connect with others who are as print-obsessed as I am.
Thanks for reading, and if you’re interested in seeing more of my work or chatting all things print, feel free to get in touch or follow along on Instagram @nickimassosart.
