In memory of Peter Wareham

We pay tribute to Peter Wareham, who was a member of Greenwich Printmakers for many years and recently passed away. A skilled printmaker and energetic character, Peter will be missed by the group. We have gathered some of our memories and responses to this sad news.

"I'm so sorry to hear Peter has passed away. He was one of the first GPA members I met in 2012 when I joined the co-op. We helped each other out with transporting work to/from the Battersea AAF back then and he was a true gent. I always admired his draughtsmanship and the way he explored so many different print mediums.  A lovely man and a skilled printmaker."

Jennifer Jokhoo

"Peter was so friendly and affable. It was always a pleasure to talk to him about his work, the state of the world and his trips to India. I'll always think of him standing next to his etchings with his anti-Brexit banner at the Affordable Art Fair. Right on, Peter!"

"I always ended up doing the rehang in the gallery with him (for alphabetical reasons!) and have a vivid memory of his 'speed hangs', not to mention his lovely work."

"Oh no, I’m so sorry, I really liked Peter.  I used to print with him at Artichoke and always has lots of laughs together. I’m so sad xx"

Nikki Braunton

"Really sorry to hear. My condolences, especially to those who knew him such a long time."

"So sad to hear this news, Peter was such a valued member of the group and a lovely fun man. We enjoyed swapping lots of tales of trips to India."

Bonny Young

"Thank you for passing on this sad news, which is hard to take in. We’ve been members of the same Galleries for about 23 years. I last spoke with him, on the phone, last summer. He was as upbeat and optimistic as ever. Such a clever and talented man." Susan Short

"So sorry to hear this sad news. He was a real character and always so upbeat, and a great printmaker. He’ll be missed by us all."

Diana Croft

"Peter was a lovely man, always supportive, a good friend, with a great sense of humour. I admired the way he quietly got on with the job in hand. He was a fabulous printmaker, not reluctant to try new ideas, his work was loved and admired by so many. He will be greatly missed."

Jennie Ing

"I remember Peter as a debonair, witty and sparky personality, young for his years, and the wide range of his artistic technique."

"A while ago, a woman came into the gallery and was fascinated by one of Peter’s prints that had been left in the studio – like the image was a long goodbye. It is quite something to create works of beauty that resonate  deeply with strangers, and that is something for us all to remember.

I am grateful to have known of a member who was part of this community and shared in its duties and camaraderie. Beyond his prints, that legacy shall linger as well."

"I echo that Bess... I think I sold one of his prints to a customer in my first sit day. And I was instantly enamoured by his work, and so was she, the buyer, only looking at all the work in his drawer. I dearly hoped he’d recover and I’d get to meet him in person. I did a couple of his sit days too, it’s so sad. Thanks everyone for sharing your memories of him. Sounds like a wonderful man."

This is such sad news of Peter. We had all hoped he would recover and join us again in all our endeavours.

Peter was a kind and thoughtful man, always willing to help, with a big smile, and he bought much laughter to our joint activities.

I remember one particular Affordable Art Fair, when Peter’s work was flying off the wall, so popular was his printmaking.  He was so chuffed!

We will miss Peter, but he we will always be remembered through his lovely work.
