Carborundum mezzotint is an unusual technique that was invented by the American artist Dox Thrash, who was employed at a Federal Arts Project workshop in Philadelphia in the 1920s, during the Great Depression. The artist creates a grained surface on the copper plate by grinding the surface with carborundum grit. The images is then created by using a burnishing tool to bring out lighter areas. The result is similar to, but less intensely dark than a traditional mezzotint.
