Sally McKay

Sally’s etchings resonate with a physical free flowing quality. Influenced by the drawings she makes of fleeting moments of figures in motion, often dancers in rehearsal and live performance as her source material, she probes what it means to be human. Inspired by the energy, vitality and stamina of the finely tuned dancers she works with, as well as community art workshops she runs, her work encourages action, mobility and activity. Sally holds an MA in Fine Art from City & Guilds of London Art School and is a Fine Art & Dance graduate of Goldsmiths College. She has held residencies and worked with many award winning choreographers and dance companies recording rehearsals through her drawing. Sally is a member of the Printmakers Council, her work is held in both public and private collections, including the V&A Museum and Scarborough Museum. Her etchings have been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Shows of 2013, 2015 and the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 2016 and 2017. Sally is a Painter and Printmaker as well as creating life-size figurative wire Sculpture. Her sculpture has been commissioned and exhibited in London, Spain, Ibiza, Dubai and Geneva. Rather than use a hard or soft ground to create the etchings, Sally prefers the spontaneity and alchemy of directly painting onto the zinc plates with a sugar-lift aquatint and spit bite. Sally is a key holder at Thames-Side Print Studios, Woolwich, her studio is on site with Open Studios every June.
